Excellent. No frills, hidden gem. Great prices too! I'm pretty sure this time around the waitress had no patience for me and my Yankee in laws or my toddler for that matter. He put one sticker on the table (he loves stickers & they keep him quiet) and she in a very brash and rude way picked it off the table in front of me, as if I was going to leave it there and ruin there 6 x's polyurethaned table. But regardless of her slightly mean attitude I will continue to go back time and again as other staff have been nothing but friendly and warm. Brisket was yum, turkey out of this world!

Pure Gold!!! This BBQ is amazing! We ordered the pork, brisket, datl corn, datl baked beans and collards for good measure! All were fantastic! Lisa and Cheryl, the head peckers, have hit a home run! Not only was the food fabulous the welcome each customer gets truly makes one feel as if you came into their Backyard for some BBQ! I needed a smile today and was served with many when dining here!

This is definitely a hidden gem in the middle of nowhere. But WOW, the food is really delicious. I can't say enough about their food. The service is exceptional and the owner is super awesome. She came to our table to see how we enjoyed our meal. Talk about personal. :) There's limited seating inside as this place is always busy (a good sign). They have outdoor seating where you can enjoy your authentic southern BBQ under the great old oaks and they also have perfect sweet tea. Yum, sweet tea. Overall, come with your appetites and order anything on the menu including their homemade sides. You really can't go wrong. We got to try it ALL since we were a party of eight and my mom won a free rack of ribs from Woodpecker's. And I'll agree with Casey B., this may be the best BBQ is NE Florida. If you like smoked meats, this is definitely the place. Dine-in or take-out. It's all good. I love being a carnivore these days. :)

Hands down the BEST BBQ in NE Florida!! Visited Woodpeckers for the first time after talking about it for a few months, what have I been waiting for!!! Lisa and her entire staff were simply awesome and made us feel like we have been coming since they opened the doors. After learning of our drive to visit Lisa promptly made sure we "sampled" all the had to offer and all I can say is "out of this world"! Being born and raised in GA I know my way around good BBQ and I can honestly say this is some of the best I have ever had. All of the meats, Pork, beef, sausage, and chicken were cooked to perfection without even a need for sauce which means you know you have a BBQ cook that know how to do it. The sides were amazing, all of them, datil corn, beans, slaw, Mac and cheese, collard greens, and green beans the green beans were my favorite and they were cooked with love for sure! Simply put this is BBQ at its finest if you haven't been you should go, I will be back for sure, I'm hooked!!! Great job Lisa and team, keep it smoking!!!!!

I had the two meat combo with sausage & turkey and it was DELICIOUS! The sausage was so juicy and the turkey was incredible. I had the datil corn and macaroni and cheese for sides and they were just as amazing! I don't live near Woodpecker's but I will definitely travel the distance to visit again! My brother lived in Austin, TX for a little while, but now lives back in Jacksonville and always says the BBQ here doesn't compare to Austin, but even he's in love with Woodpecker's! Don't miss trying this place!

A hole in the wall. This is what this place is. Located 30m away from Downtown Jacksonville, and surrounded by trailers, RVS, and small farms, this restaurant is a good place to have a bbq meal. I had a brisket platter with corn in the cob and baked beans. Great flavor, especially the beans. The best: the baked beans, great flavors, perfect for me. They have five different types of sauces and one of mustard. They are really really good, they even have it for sale. The so so: the corn in the cob was too simple, I guess that is how they make it. The not so good: no alcohol, no beer. In a bbq this is a must, so they have to offer beer if they want to get bigger. No plates. When I asked for plates, they gave me a plastic basket, those used to serve the bbq. Rusty and dirty tables outside. The tables were dirty, covered with oak polen. If you feel like eating a good bbq regardless the negative points, this is the place to eat.

First time here, had the pork sandwich with the baked beans and an extra side of garlic bread. The pork is tender flavorful and good all by itself. If you want to indulge your taste buds add some bbq sauces of which they have 4. Hickory, mustard based, brown sugar smoked kind and a more liquid spicier sauce. The beans were so good I ate them as is as I usually add a sauce to them but I didn't. My girlfriend had the ribs of which the meat was falling off the bones it was that tender and full of flavor as well. Definitely will be coming back. What they're doing is right and is so good that if you don't get here early enough you'll have to wait til tomorrow cause they close once it's all gone.

This is the real deal. We got the BBQ sampler plate (see my photos ). The ribs are great. Loved the pork and chicken. The sausage and brisket are really really great. We moved to FL from Texas (30+ yrs in TX). This place is right up there with Hard Eight and some of the other great BBQ restaurants. People are very friendly. Place is very clean. Their sides are excellent. Also love their sauces (home made). Wish I could give them more than five stars.

Wow best BBQ I've ever had. They completely blow away the competition. They make you feel like your part of the family with there southern charm. Don't waste your money anywhere else you won't regret Woodpeckers. There brisket is awesome and I love the smoked sausage. The sides are all delicious as well.

Hands down the best barbaque in the area!! We have tried everything and it is all amazing. Ribs are so tender with the most amazing flavor. No need for sauce! The pork is also great and the fresh sides are always yummy. Ms. Lisa and her crew sure do know how to cook barbaque right!! We love taken friends there and know that they'll be just as hooked on Woodpeckers as we are!! Can't wait for our next visit!!

When I see a five star rating, I just have to see if it is just that, so my husband Greg and I went to Woodpeckers. It was a scenic drive down 13 and we found the place hopping at 1pm on a Friday afternoon. We took the only available table and the service was quick, friendly and polite. I ordered the pork with sides of mac and cheese and cole slaw and Greg ordered the ribs with beans and cole slaw. We shared our meats using the delicious and tangy sweet sauce. Everything was delicious but the cole slaw and pork were outrageously good. So much food, I could not finish it all. The owner was friendly and the chit chat was like I was at home. The only regret I have is I did not have room for their chocolate cake! I recommend it highly!

A Slice Of BBQ HEAVEN! We consider ourselves to be "foodies" we have no problem driving hours out of the way for something delish! This place was AMAZING!! And its 10 minutes from home , which I had no idea ! I had the 2 meat combo of brisket and pork which was out of this world and the sides are phenomenal! Couldn't ask for better food or service. You may have to wait but it is worth it! This is the place to be !

So my wife and I are always on the look out for good bbq. Because we live in the south. Although we don't live too far from Woodpecker's, we had never been there. We will definitely go back. Ok, first of all, as you can read from all the other reviews, the place isn't much to look at. Fine, so when you drive into the parking lot you can swear you hear banjos playing and the case of Deliverance staring at you from the trees. Don't worry! No really. Walking into the place, the first thing that my wife and I noticed was that it was CLEAN. Awesome number 1. Second thing that we noticed? How freakin' friendly everyone was to us. Like many others, we likely had that deer in the headlights look about us. The staff is probably used to that and put us at ease immediately. They joked with us and took the time to make sure that we were comfortable. Awesome number 2. Ok. The food. Well, my wife really wanted to try the brisket. Unfortunately they were sold out. That was a bummer. Key point to know here folks - they sell out of food! We were there at about 5 PM. So we got the ribs. Which they sold out of shortly after we ordered. Spareribs. Great smoke ring. Tasty bark. Fat rendered well. These are some good freakin' ribs! Awesome number 3. 5 different sauces on the table. I didn't care for the datil mustard, but the others worked well with the pork. We had greens, greenbeans and the datil corn for sides. Greens were fantastic. Greenbeans were good. Datil corn is interesting. Sweet corn. Lots of black pepper. And the datil pepper sneaks up on you. Its not for everyone. I like them. My wife did not. We ended up getting a full slab of ribs for the two of us. It was cheaper than doing two separate platters (at the suggestion of the staff - thanks!) We still ended up taking ribs home because it was a lot of food. Yet didn't cost too much. Awesome number 4. By the time we were done with our meal, they were down to just chicken and turkey. Yet people were staying because its good food! We will definitely go back to try the brisket, pork, chicken etc. A great meal and a definite gem if you're looking for great BBQ!

The food and service from the owner and her crew was awesome. It's been too long since we went for lunch. But we will go back. Great BBQ and sides. And they did a great job re-purposing the space as a restaurant.

Exactly what you would expect from a hole in the wall BBQ joint in the woods and more! We had the half pulled pork, datil beans and datil corn with the datil mustard sauce. It was unbelievable! The pork was generous and perfectly cooked. The beans were mouthwatering and had the perfect amount of spice. The corn must have a dash of crack because I can't stop thinking about it. The service is great with the added charm and southern hospitality of the sweet owner. We can't wait to return.

The food was awesome and the staff trated us like family. A hidden gem. I had the turkey and Datil corn who would have thought. I was happy to see a great BBQ place so close to home.

Been here about 1/2 dozen times now and have secured THE BEST BBQ PLACE to dine. In fact, my husband and I have made it our place to have Sunday Lunch, which says a lot, because it's only second of Momma's house. The barbeque is so good that I will not even entertain going to any "chain BBQ" like Bono's, Sonny's or the like. Owner Lisa Marston and her crew make you feel welcome before you even step in the door. In our last Sunday visit, we discovered "table sharing" where another party offered up the other half of their table to us. We did the same again this Sunday (I told you Sunday is our "New Family Tradition") Last week, we ordered the Woodpecker's Sampler (not on the menu, but something the owner put together so you can try all of their BBQ fare) of ribs, brisket, pork, sausage, chicken and turkey with choice of 4 sides and 4 slices of buttered Texas toast--all for $30.00! What a deal and it helped me decide what I would order the next Sunday, which was their 1/2 order rib plate, that came with 3 large and meaty pork ribs, and a side of Datil baked beans and Ms. Cheryl's Southern green beans that I swear was made with Love! Did I mention that they also have 6 different kinds of barbeque sauce that are home-made and they sell it??? Closed on Mondays, be sure to come early Tuesday-Sunday! All their food and BBQ are made fresh daily, and they are open until the sell out! We live on the CR-210 corridor and restaurants are few and far between. I am so blessed and outrageously happy that Woodpecker's Backyard BBQ is literally in my backyard and that I've found it! If you want REAL BBQ that is "consistently-fabulously good" then this is your place. I know it is ours!

Fantastic BBQ! Smoked turkey is great as is the ribs, pulled pork and brisket! Generous portions and fantastic tasty sides! The datil corn and datil baked beans are delish!! The collard greens are also great! Lisa, the owner, really cares if you are enjoying your food and comes to our table every time to check on us! Great, out of the way place, with THE BEST BBQ!!!

Just had lunch here and oh my gosh about died and went to heaven! Sweet tea was perfect, beef brisket melted in my mouth, no need for sauce, datil corn next time I will take home some of it was soooo good. Service is top notch here and very clean. You have got to try this place. Owner even makes sure everything is up to snuff now when was the last time you had that kind of service along with great food? No I am not a relative nor a friend just someone who likes good food, great service and good prices. My husband had the sausage and he felt same way about his meal, and the service. We will be back the extra ride is WELL worth the great food!!!!

Great ribs and moist brisket. The datil corn and beans are awesome. If this place was in texas I would give it 3.5-4 stars because it was a little slow.......but......the meat cuts are excellent and it's middle of nowhere florida so it gets five stars.....way better than mojos

  • Scott L.

Datil corn is very good. Beans have some sweet vinegar flavor with a touch of hot that is very good. pulled pork is smokey but doesn't overpower the meat. Its moist and very tender. The Sausage is the best I have had locally. That will be what I order next time. Service is quirky/local, friendly and very good. If your riding the Bartram Trail near Hwy 13, don't miss it. If they served beer it would be perfect.

Excellent BBQ. We just tried the brisket, pork, and datil corn and beans and it was all as good as it gets. We are the type of people who drive an hour off the highway for good BBQ when we're traveling, and this meat and sides are as good or better than I've found all over the southeast. Even if you're just passing by on I-95 this restaurant is worth the detour off the highway. Thanks Woodpeckers for giving our neighborhood such a great restaurant! Y'all put a lot of hard work into the building and most importantly the BBQ, and it shows. We'll be telling all our friends about it and visiting often.

This stuff is real Southern BBQ! Off of the beaten path but well worth an adventure. The sauce, and corn is laced with datil peppers. I will be back!

The brisket was great- moist, flavorful and tender. Their datil corn and beans are just spicey enough to be "warm!" Friendly, clean and nice folks.

I love good BBQ, but it doesn't always love me...until Woodpeckers! I was first introduced to Woodpeckers about 3 months ago on business trip to Jville and loved it so much I made it for lunch or dinner every day I was in town. I had to come back down this week and actually scheduled an earlier flight so I left myself enough time to get to Woodpeckers before my meeting began...went straight from the airport to peckers. The sides are as good as the meat and that's saying something. nothing is over rubbed and you can use one of a half dozen sauces to flavor it to your liking...if there is such a thing as elegantly dressed BBQ, Woodpeckers is it...the staff is like the family you wish you had;-). All Good... nothing but good!

I've had some great barbecue in my life but this one tops it all. Original taste, short menu, ribs chicken pork all made to perfection. Word around the campfire is that the brisket is the bomb, they ran out of it today we have to come back some other time to try it. Kids asked for additional macaroni and cheese.

Ok I think to judge a BBQ place you have to go at least 4 times and try all the proteins. Done. Go early go late try to catch em off guard. Nothing doing.. This place has super tender brisket, real smoked turkey breast not lunch meat slices, fall of the bone ribs with a solid smoke ring, and tender, tender pork. Sometimes they have collard greens which you will dream about. You can live for 3 days in the woods on their beans alone. (You might be asked to) They sell out nightly so go early for choices. The staff and the sauce are saucy! Great food and you can almost split things as portions are American sized. Let's remember it's a corner redneck BBQ so if you don't want to eat family style on a picnic table with plastic forks amongst talking people then head to Capital Grille. Everyone is friendly so go hungry and in a good mood with high expectations for BBQ and low expectations for fancy-schmansy and you will leave full and go back, I say. PS it's also some of the best leftover - second try meals so go big then go home! And I am not related and don't work there but am glad I live 5 miles away down a country road...Gonna write me a country song about it...."......." you fill in your own words

The turkey was good. The daily corn was outstanding as we're the greens. I will be back soon to try the ribs

Great Food! I have eaten here several times and everything is delicious. The brisket is definitely one of my favorites. The turkey has a great smokey flavor and the pork is nice and moist. You have to try all the side dishes. Lisa is the real deal when it comes to food and taking care of her customers.

A small yet perfect menu. We had them cater our community holiday party. The ribs, chicken, brisket & pulled pork are some of the best that I have had great side dishes including special datil sides. Come early as they stay open till they are out of food. The service staff here is excellent and the prices/portions are very good.
